Epistemic Humility
It is hard to believe that a erudite phrase "Epistemic Humility" packs in its implication the key to the future of humanity: it builds the road for humanity-saving and humanity-promoting innovation; it holds the baton to a fair and efficient resolution for human conflicts whether religious and universal, or pedestrian and particular. Epistemic humility is a floating device for people drowning in a psychological quagmire. Epistemic Humility is a mental attitude, a belief that what we know is not everything that is worth knowing -- applied to any particuclar matter under consideration. The theory of knowledge -- epistemology -- has two confronting schools: 'what we still don't know is not very important' school, and 'what we know is unbound' opposite thesis. The former, epistemic confidence, keeps its adherents blind to anything important and relevant that was not imagined before. Epistemic confidence leads to missing unforeseen opportunities, and it dooms its holders to remaining defenseless before previosuly unimagined threats. Epistemic humility -- by contrast -- keeps one alert to popping and emerging knowledge that was not in the pocket before. May be it was not even in the 'expected' category, possibly beyond any imagination of yesterday and today. Epistemic Humility attitude (EHA) keeps its adherents open-minded, alert. They are most likely to spot unexpected opportunities, and they have the best chance to notice sneaky and surprising threats.
It is amazing that this erudite two words phrase does serve as a rock-solid foundation for a full blown philosophy of life. And what is even more surprising, epistemic humility is a reliable foundational platform for a universal religion aiming to replace today's common pre-science religions, however popular they may be.
